The deadline for applications is given in the periodic Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellows call.

A complete LANL Seaborg Postdoc application package must be submitted by the mentor to seaborg@lanl.gov.

Applications for LANL postdoctoral researchers as candidates to Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellows Program are submitted by the mentor. It is the mentor’s responsibility to ensure that the Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellows applicant's package contains:

    • A clearly defined research proposal of up to 300 words, distinct from research proposed in the original postdoctoral package, providing a unique scope of work
    • An additional one-page nomination memo communicating the strength of the candidate
    • A copy of a complete Los Alamos postdoctoral package
    • The anticipated start date of the candidate

All materials need to be combined into one PDF document titled with the applicant's information (PostdocName_Group.pdf) and sent electronically to seaborg@lanl.gov.

The Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellows Program provides approximately half-time support and a modest amount of M&S funds to Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellows with a two-year commitment. Funding will not extend past the postdoc’s LANL postdoctoral appointment. Funding is subject to all LDRD rules. Both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply, but U.S. citizenship may be required for some research.

    Selection Process

The Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellows Internal Review Committee will evaluate applications based on candidate excellence and relevance of the proposed research to Los Alamos missions in heavy-element science, engineering, and technology according to the following weighting:

    Proposed Seaborg Fellows research project:

    • Creativity and innovation (20%),
    • Impact on mission (20%),
    • Research approach (20%),
    • Proposed Seaborg Fellows candidate,
    • Strength of candidate (40%).

Successful candidates must be approved by the Postdoctoral Program before receiving funding and be performing research in materials, chemistry, signatures, theory and modeling, fabrication, detection, disposal, global security, forensics, and other specialized fields surrounding actinides.

Final selections will be made by the Seaborg Institute Director and Deputy Director based on rankings, programmatic balance, project strategic importance, and budget.

    Reporting Requirements

The Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellows Program requires performance metrics of activities and resource management reporting. Successful Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellows are required to report project activities and to participate in program activities with funding dependent upon compliance with these requirements:

    • Recipients are required to participate in the Actinide Science lecture series by both attending lectures and presenting a scientific lecture on actinide science in this series.
    • Submission of a viewgraph and brief write-up of the project and its goals.
    • Provision of metrics information as requested.
    • Submission of an overview article on the recipient’s work for the Actinide Research Quarterly publication.
    • Provision of a list of project publications and presentations on an annual basis.
    • Upon completion of the appointment, the recipient will be required to submit a short report on research progress, publications, presentations, and future employment status.
